I think the biggest challenge for electric vehicles will be infrastructure, cost, and customer acceptance. But this is really not a China unique situation. By working globally with our engineering teams, including here in China, we are trying to resolve all three of these challenges as fast as possible.

But to be honest, what I'm most proud about is the team who have been working around the clock in the past three years taking the concept from a piece of paper to production with technologies that did not exist a few years ago.

Yesterday we did announce the price for the Chevrolet Volt after many months of rumors and speculation. In the United States, there will be a 7,500 US dollar tax credit that will make the price of the vehicle 33,500 US dollar and this government incentive is critical for introduction and acceptance of new technology like the Chevy Volt. We are working on the second and third generation technologies to reduce the cost even more. So yes, it is possible but it takes cooperation with the government and continued development for the next generations.

We think the Volt will be a class leading vehicle because there's no one else in this class. It offers pure electric driving but also the ability to drive much longer over 500 kilometers, which no other electric vehicles can do with this range extending capability.

Great question and something that a Volt owner will never have to worry about. After you drive 60 kilometers electrically, a small engine turns on, creates electricity, and allows you drive additional 450 kilometers with no worries.

GM is very active with the governments, the power producers and the infrastructure providers in a cooperative manner. We worked together very well in our developing solutions that help everyone. Yesterday, we had Mr. Lai Xiaokang from State Grid in China at our Expo forum talking about the grid's capability to handle a million plug-in hybrids. What he showed was we must to work together to charge smartly at the right times, and there will be no problems with the grid.

Today there is a very good lithium-ion battery recyling program around the world, because of the high number of cell phones, PDAs, Blackberries, iPhones. We are working with the same companies to recycle vehicle batteries for vehicles like the Chevy Volt. The good news is we have tested our Volt battery to last 8 years or longer before recycling is needed. So this really will not be a problem for a long time. Boy... wouldn't it be good if your cell phone battery can last for 8 years!

Fast charging can shorten the life of a battery, but our job at General Motors is to design a battery and charger that does not do this. we are working on it right now and we will provide more information later this year. In China, the Chevy Volt will only need 3 hours to be charged with your local family outlet.

The first generation of any technology is very expensive. And the support by the government incentive allows customers to buy these vehicles at a similar price as conventional vehicles. It is our job as engineers to make the second generation technologies to be equal without incentive. And we have a lot of smart engineers working on this right now.

We have tested our vehicles to many extreme condistions, including 45C degrees down to minus 25C degrees and wet and dry conditions to make sure there will be no maintenance problems. Two weeks ago, we announced that General Motors will stand behind this product with a 8 year/160,000 kilometers warranty of the battery. We would only do that if we were confident in our work.

Yes, I have... In fact, I drive a Volt two or three days every month to see how my team is doing. Plus some very long drives every three or four months, and I can tell you, there is no better electric vehicle in the world! Yes, I'm biased but it's true.
