How much is EN-V projected to cost? Would it be similar to the purchase-price of a motorcycle?
2:12 Chris Borroni-Bird:
We have not calculated the cost for EN-V because it is a vision concept, but the technology is feasible today and we we believe with such a small vehicle, not needing a large battery and motor to propel it that such vehicles will be very affordable and less expensive than today's cars.

2:28 Chris Borroni-Bird:
yes, 20 years is enough time because the technology is available today and these vehicles should be very affordable. the challenges is to find a good place to introduce it
Is EN-V safe enough? what do you say if it meets a crash?
Tina:
2:31 Chris Borroni-Bird:
EN-V is designed for low speed urban environment and has technology to avoid collisions. We would like to see it operate on dedicated lanes or roads to give more protection, otherwise we will need to engineer a future version with more structure to provide crash protection

2:47 [Comment From Lei China Auto Review Lei China Auto Review: ]
Hi chris thank you for taking time out for the webchat. As the ENV is still at the concept stage, what will be done to the concept going forward and what is your estimate of a time frame of when an actual production prototype would be ready?
Tina:
2:48 Chris Borroni-Bird:
I'm beginning to think about the next generation even now. but for sure it will contain the same basic elements, electric networked and small vehicle because we need to solve energy, environment , safety, congestion , parking and affordability at the same time
2:49 Chris Borroni-Bird:
it is difficult to predict when such vehicle can go to production and may depend on finding a willing city or organization to test this system and vehicles out because EN-V is not an individual vehicle, it is a networked vehicle

Tina:
2:50 Chris Borroni-Bird:
if EN-Vs can operate on dedicated lanes or zones, then we don't need to design them to coexist with heavier cars and trucks and they could look quite similar to the current concept
2:51 Chris Borroni-Bird:
if want them to coexist with conventional vehicles, we cannot rely on the networking, because conventional vehicles don't have wireless communication capability. so we will have to increase the structure of the vehicle to provide necessary protection
2:52 Chris Borroni-Bird:
having said that, the vehicle still provides more protection than electric bike or scooter
2:53 [Comment From Ada Queen Ada Queen: ]
2:53 Chris Borroni-Bird:
I'm sorry, I'm afraid for 3 million visitors we will not be able to have everyone drive the vehicles in the pavilion....
2:56 [Comment From auto today auto today: ]
2:56 Chris Borroni-Bird:
the PUMA concept was only for the chasis system, EN-V builds on the platform by adding autonomous driving and compelling design and styling

3:01 [Comment From auto today auto today: ]
3:02 Chris Borroni-Bird:
probably reaching zero fatalities on the roads is the most challenging goal, because it requires more cooperation not only between car companies but with governments and individual pedestrians and cyclists
3:04 [Comment From China Automotive Review China Automotive Review: ]
Also does this ENV mean that GM has put EV as its future stress to replace current hybrids?
Tina:
China Automotive ...
3:04 Chris Borroni-Bird:
EN-V is a specific solution for urban environments. battery electric vehicles like EN-V currently do not have the range to meet all transportation needs but it can make a lot of sense for driving in big cities because they are zero emissions and can be small, quiet and affordable
3:05 Chris Borroni-Bird:
We are planning on some media ride and drive programs very soon... please stay tuned
3:07 Chris Borroni-Bird:
conventional electric vehicles tend to be quite expensive, because they are designed for about 100 kM range and 100 KM/hour speed. EN-V is a smaller, lighter vehicle with range and speed appropriate for urban environment only, and this can make it really affordable
3:09 [Comment From vecky vecky: ]
3:09 Chris Borroni-Bird:
EN-V uses electric motors in each wheel to provide braking, steering and accelerating so there's no steering column or foot brakes. it uses sensors, and wireless communications and GPS to drive autonomously so it can avoid crashes
3:10 [Comment From gmemployee gmemployee: ]
Dear Chris, would you please tell us which supplier provided the battery for EN-V? I was told it comes from a Chinese supplier. Could you please tell us the name?
Tina:
3:10 Chris Borroni-Bird:
The battery used in EN-V is the same one that's used in Segway. it comes from China and the supplier is Valence
Valence
Tina:
3:12 Chris Borroni-Bird:
In autonomous mode, everyone can get a ride, no one needs a license!
3:13 Chris Borroni-Bird:
In some parts of the world today, low speed vehicles do not require same license as for cars...
