GM Celebrates Sale of 1 Millionth Vehicle in China in 2009
Shanghai – General Motors today announced the sale of its 1 millionth vehicle in China in 2009. Employees from GM China and its joint ventures celebrated with the millionth customer, Ye Banjun, who purchased a silver Buick LaCROSSE sedan.
This is the third consecutive year that GM and its joint ventures have reached the 1 million unit sales mark in China and the earliest they have achieved the milestone. In 2007, GM became the first global automaker to surpass 1 million unit sales in China in a calendar year.
“For more than a decade, GM has been focused on working with our joint ventures to meet the needs of our local customers,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. “As the customer is our first priority, GM will continue to roll out new models under our portfolio of six brands to win over more Chinese vehicle buyers and remain ahead of the competition.
“While we are proud of our achievements, GM and our employees remain fully committed to keeping up the momentum,” Wale added. “We will further leverage the global resources of the new General Motors Company to offer vehicle buyers across China an unmatched selection of products and services.”
GM has been number one in China among global OEMs in terms of sales and market share in the first seven months of 2009, the result of the record performance of both its Shanghai GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling joint ventures.
