The Greener Side of GM - 5K Race

Each time GM employee and UAW Local 31 member Lyle Birchman looked around the area outside of Lansing Delta Township, he was inspired.
"The plant's 73-acre conservation area is amazing," shared Lyle. "One second you're out front of a manufacturing plant that builds thousands of cars, and after a five-minute walk, you're in the middle of the woods with a pond on either side of you."
The GM LDT Woods & Water 5K was Lyle's brainchild, and he saw it through to fruition on Aug. 29. With temperatures around 70 degrees at 8:00 a.m., nearly 100 runners and walkers alike took off through the conservation area. The route began at the plant's welcome center, before winding through meadows and woods and returning again.
The event was a unique opportunity to showcase LDT's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified Gold story with the public. Further, it gave those who build the vehicles a chance to partner with those who sell them - thanks to participation and sponsorship from Lansing-area Buick/GMC dealers Crippen, Team One and Glenn Buege. Funds of approximately $2,800 raised from the event were donated to the Eaton County Conservation District.
