Shanghai (December 3, 2009) – SAIC and GM announced today the highlights of the show and the experience that visitors can expect at their joint pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai.  The official joint global automobile partners also introduced the all-star creative team behind the movie that will be shown at their corporate pavilion and kicked off a series of promotional activities.

A Unique Pavilion Experience

The pavilion will be divided into Pre-Show, Main Show and Post-Show areas.

"In the Pre-Show area, we will highlight the major contributions of the automobile to people’s lives,” said Jean Liu-Barnocki, Deputy Director of the SAIC-GM Pavilion.  “At the same time, we will look at some of the challenges that the automotive industry is facing and how they are being addressed.  In the Main Show area, visitors will feel as if they are actually in the movie being shown, as they see the infinite possibilities that the motor vehicle will bring to their lives.  This will lead to an even bigger surprise.  In the Post-Show area, the audience will see that the vision portrayed in the film is already becoming a reality through the power of technology.”

A Memorable Movie Theme

Dr. Jin Qi, Director of the SAIC-GM Pavilion, disclosed that the Main Show area movie will be themed “2030, Xing!”  According to Dr. Jin, “Automobiles have been serving people as a means of transportation for over 100 years.  ‘Xing’ is about travel and movement.  It is the best way to describe the corporate values of SAIC and GM.  We are taking 20 years as an interval.  We looked back at how people were moving 20 years ago, and then envisioned how we will be moving in another 20 years – in the year 2030.  The film looks at how ‘xing’ will happen in Shanghai.  The audience will view a harmonious picture of the city in 2030 and the positive changes to our lives brought by changes to the automobile.”

The movie, which took three years to develop, was filmed with a 4K high-definition RED camera.  Thirty 20,000-lumen projectors will project the movie on four 6.5-meter by 38-meter surround screens with a visual angle of 144 degrees.  The audience will sit in 488 zero-delay motion seats, enabling them to become fully immersed in the experience.

"After watching the film, we believe each audience member will be inspired by our vision of the city of the future, where ease of movement will bring people closer together,” Dr. Jin said. “Creating ease of movement, sketching out a future of sustainable development and using technology to prove that this vision of 2030 is achievable is the mission of the SAIC-GM Pavilion. More importantly, it is the responsibility of the automotive industry.”

Liu-Barnocki added, “In the future, people will be relieved from the stress of driving and have more free time behind the wheel.  Information sharing between cars will eliminate accidents and traffic jams.  The electrification of the automobile will lead to zero emissions, allowing both humans and the planet to breathe easier.  On top of that, future automobiles will be more fun and fashionable.  All of these elements will come together to simplify our ‘xing.’”

An All-Star Creative Team

Famous talk show host CT Cao has been engaged in the performance of a lifetime.  As the creative force behind the SAIC-GM Pavilion’s creative production team, he assembled an all-star cast of professionals from mainland China, the United States, Germany, Australia, Canada, Finland, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan to produce “2030, Xing!”

Award-winning Taiwanese director Kuang Sheng, the inspiration behind countless music videos, oversaw filming.  Famous musician Wa Kin lent the film its melody and lyrics.  Chan Kwong Wing, winner of the Hong Kong Film Award for best original film score, worked on the movie’s soundtrack.  DI, the team responsible for the “Harry Potter” movie franchise, handled lighting.  Pixomondo, the team behind recent Hollywood blockbuster “2012,” led the computer graphics and special effects efforts.  PPS film studio, under the leadership of Hong Kong film legend See-Yuan Ng, is handling post-production.

According to Cao, “The film will give the audience a glimpse at the potential of 2030, as the future is unveiled before their eyes and they see the mobile life of 2030 Shanghai.  It will offer an emotional mixture of warmth, romance, joy and surprise.”
