Give Mother Earth More Gentleness
March is a big month for the Earth: World Forest Day, World Water Day, and Earth Hour……Among all these Earth-related days, Earth Hour might be the most important one.
In conjunction with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), more than 10 billion people from 6000 cities around the world took part in this environmental celebration this year. This was a great example of people getting together for a common goal, which made this one-hour blackout a beautiful and special date for everyone on earth.
The meaning of the one-hour blackout doesn't just lie in the duration itself, it's meant to show people that we can do a lot to help protect environment. You can take a short walk at night with your family several times a week or you can vow to give up throwing away disposable chopsticks, lunch-boxes, and plastic bags……
Therefore, from certain perspective of view, the campaign means more than itself.
In 2007, Sydney become the pioneer city to hold the Earth-Hour event, and that hour saved 48,760 kilowatt-hours of electric power, equaling the amount that would be consumed by 400,000 televisions or 800,000 60-watt bulbs running at the same time. The 52-ton carbon dioxide emission reduction equates the emission from 101,800 vehicles a whole year.
Reporter Matthew Warren from THE AUSTRALIAN, wrote in the article What the Australian embraced is the Hour of the Earth Rather Than the Green Energy, "Thousands of Australian families turned on the light after the Earth Hour, but only 10% of them would turn to green energy in the future. There is still a huge gap between the symbolic significance of the hour and its actual action."
Perhaps the most essential way to be kind to our earth and to save human beings is to continuously advance the exploration of green energy and the innovation of new technology at the same time while putting emphasis on subjective initiative and developing the potential of all human beings.
The auto-industry, which is one of the biggest carbon dioxide emission producers, is definitely leading the way in the new energy era. Not long before the Earth-Hour this year, the Electric Networked Vehicle concept EN-V from GM was launched in Shanghai. This two-seated vehicle is powered by a lithium battery, which can be charged by an ordinary electric outlet, and can drive 40 kilometers on a single charge. This EN-V achieves the goal of zero emissions and realizes zero fuel consumption, which is the newest solution from General Motors to personal urban mobility.
This allows us to see the road to new energy. The pursuit of this goal is the same as Earth Hour, although they are approaching it in a different way. Only after we realize that the individual is the power instead of the earth can we have a firm confidence to create technological miracles and save our earth in the end.
With the full blossom of hybrid electricity, alternative fuels, fuel-cell, electric vehicle and lithium energy, it is possible that our next Earth Hour will not be the only way for us to reduce emission.
If you are willing to, please turn off the light, save water and drive green-energy cars for that hour, and be gentle to our Earth.
