GM’s participation in Expo 2010 is all about one word: vision. While urban transportation in 2030 is too broad and too far away for me to envision (at least before I visit the SAIC-GM Pavilion), let’s just zoom in and focus on the next biggest GM moment – the arrival of the Chevrolet Volt in China.

Spectacular. That’s my vision for the night when the Volt arrives. Somehow I believe it should be at night. I associate daytime vehicle launches with boring events where a piece of cloth is removed. It’s the Volt, so it should be special. It should not take place during daytime. I guess that’s my reasoning.

Below are pictures of what immediately comes to my mind when I think about spectacular events: A plethora of stars at the Galloway Forest Park in Scotland (one of the best places for stargazing in the world and the place where I dream my future husband will get down on his knees and propose to me. lol)…

Or Michael Jackson’s $30 million promotional campaign for his History album, which included a total of 82 concerts with record-breaking attendance of 4.5 million fans.

But let’s not get carried away. Perhaps what will happen when the Volt arrives in China is like this: thunder will boom from afar in a dark night - a sign that something big is about to happen. In the midst of a loud thunder clap will come the sound of a helicopter. You will look up and spot a shadow moving nearer as it grows in size.

All of a sudden, the sky will be brightened by a strike of lightning and you will notice the helicopter hovering around the Shanghai World Financial Center carrying a Volt! More and more lightning flashes will begin to appear in the sky as the helicopter chases after them as if it is hunting natural electric energy.

A lightning bolt will hit the Volt! In the middle of nature’s fury, the body of the vehicle will start to glow with electrifying glamour and its wheels will start to roll as if it has just been fully charged!

The helicopter will slowly descend. The Volt is about to land on Chinese soil! Three… two… one… the second it touches down, the Shanghai World Financial Center will light up. Indeed, the Volt will light up the world.

To quote Michael Jackson, “This is IT.”
