A true story
When coming into problems, please do not respond directly: It is impossible.
This is a typical American attitude! Then how about us? Well let’s take this in mind for mutual improvement!
This is a true story between a GM customer and the company's customer service department.
One day, the GM Pontiac department received a complaint letter, which read:
This is the second time I write to you on the same matter, I do not blame you for not writing back, because I understand if you think I'm crazy, but it is a true story.
It is our family tradition to have ice cream as dessert after dinner. As there are many flavors, we vote every day after dinner for what taste to have, when it is decided, I will drive to buy them. But problem occurs after I buy a new Pontiac.
You know what? Every time I buy the vanilla flavor, the car would shut down. But the car does perfect if I buy any other flavor.
This may sounds crazy, but I am very serious – why would the car shut when I buy a vanilla ice cream, and whenever I buy other flavors, it is as robust as ever?
Why? Why?
Although the general manager of Pontiac was suspicious about the letter, he sent an engineer to find out. When the engineer visited the man, he was surprised to find the letter was actually from a successful, optimistic, and well-educated man.
The meeting time was arranged to be just after dinner, so the two of them jumped into the car and headed to the ice cream shop.
That night the vanilla flavor won, when the ice cream was brought back to the car, the car shut down again.
The engineer came by three nights after that.
The first night was chocolate ice cream, the car was all right.
The second night, strawberry ice cream, and the car was also fine.
The third night, vanilla ice cream, and the car "SHUT DOWN".
Of course, the engineer, who took a logical thinking pattern, refused to believe that this man's car was allergenic on vanilla. Therefore, he continued to arrange meetings, hoping to solve the problem.
The engineer started to write down everything happening from the start, such as time, type of oil the car used, and the time the car headed out and came back, and so on, based on the data, he had a conclusion:
This man spends less time when he buys vanilla ice cream than when he buys other flavors.
Why?
The reason is the internal settings of the ice cream shop.
The reason is, as vanilla ice cream is the most popular flavor, they are displayed in a separate freezer in front for customers’ convenience, while other tastes are placed farther away from the cash register in the back.
Now, what the engineer wants to know is: Why will the car shut down when it has less time between it shuts and re-starts?
It is definitely not about vanilla. In no time, the engineer has an answer in his mind: "the vapor lock."
When the man buys other tastes, there’s enough time for the engine to cool off. But the engine would be too hot for the vapor lock to cool off due to shorter periods of time it takes to buy the vanilla flavor.
Sometimes, some problems really exist even if it seems crazy. But if we look at them with a cool mind in search of a solution, they will become simple instead of being complicated or crazy.
When you come into problems, or when someone tells you his problems, please do not respond directly: It is IMPOSSIBLE, without any sincere effort. Look closely at the word "impossible" -, you may be able to see "I'm possible".
It is the attitude and understanding we have toward the matter that makes the difference.
