A New Chapter for GM &Me
Today is quite a memorable day for both GM China and for me personally. This is the day that we are announcing the establishment of GM’s China Science Lab in Shanghai and my appointment as its director. This not only represents the comprehensive upgrade of GM’s investment in R&D in China, but also indicates a new stop for me on my career path.
Having worked for Intel for the past 15 years, it is exciting for me to be bringing my research management experience and computing and communications technology expertise to GM at the exact time that technology, which I have a passion for, is riding in the front seat as GM drives into the future. There is nothing more exciting than getting the chance to help a company write its history.

Today, the automotive industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Petroleum and climate change challenges are calling for low-cost, renewable energy and zero-emission solutions, while the rise of rapidly growing megacities like Shanghai and Beijing is calling for personal mobility that incorporates congestion-free commuting and vehicles that never crash.
These challenges cannot be addressed without technology leadership. Leveraging GM’s China Science Lab, together with other GM R&D facilities around the world, we will be taking on these challenges and developing solutions for them.
The China Science Lab’s initial research focus areas will be advanced propulsion and joining technology, megacity safety research, and advanced vehicle development, quickly followed by light material and battery cell research.
We will closely collaborate on research with China’s universities and research institutes. This collaboration will not only create new innovations, but also contribute to the development of the nation’s research talent. For those of you with a passion for technology and expertise in the research areas mentioned above, I encourage you to visit GM China’s company website to check out opportunities available with the China Science Lab.
As this is my first blog posting, I would like to hear from you. I welcome your comments and suggestions on what you would like to know more about.
